Cyprus wants to create a new ministry capable of solving environmental problems. Now these functions are assigned to a department within the Ministry of Agriculture. The decision to organize an independent environmental service was made personally by the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides. According to Mr. Christodoulidis, the main task of the newly created ministry will be to control the country's transition to a "green" economy.
True, the Ministry of Finance of Cyprus has not yet found the 2 million euros needed to create a new structure. As a temporary measure, officials have suggested hiring a dozen more inspectors from the Ministry of Agriculture to oversee environmental compliance.
However, President Christodoulidis is pushing for the creation of not just one but three new ministries: environment, sports and migration. According to the President of the Republic of Cyprus, an independent environmental agency is necessary for the implementation of three new projects:
"Cyprus tomorrow" - the transition of the country to a "green" economy and digital rails;
"Fit for 55" - a climate program to reduce greenhouse gas emissions;
"Vision 2035" - a long-term program for the sustainable development of the economy.
All these projects should bring the country to a new level of comfort. Unless, of course, the necessary funds are found.
