Croatia is aiming to set a Guinness World Record for having the smallest sea in the world. The country intends to submit an application for the Kila Sea, a body of water that is actually a bay covering approximately six square kilometers. While locals refer to it as a sea, it is officially classified as a bay.
Traditionally, deep inlets along the Adriatic coast in this region of Croatia have been called "seas." Among them are the Vira Sea, the Murter Sea, the Novigrad Sea, and a dozen other bays east of the city of Zadar.
If these inlets were recognized as seas, Croatia could submit another application for the Guinness World Record as the country with the most seas on its territory. However, this is unlikely to happen.
What is undoubtedly true is that Croatia has a vast number of islands. The exact number is unknown, but estimates range from 1,185 to 1,217 islands and islets. It's no wonder Croatia is often called the "country of a thousand islands."
Croatia also boasts one of the longest coastlines in the Mediterranean: 5,835 km, including islands. This accounts for three-quarters of the total Adriatic coastline! This is a fact truly worthy of the Guinness World Record.
In any case, the association of Croatia with this title adds to the country's tourist appeal and draws attention to its territories.
