The press service of the Kaluga Zaseki Nature Reserve reported that 91 baby bison were born in the protected forest last year. This is a record figure in this area.
In total, more than 500 bison live in the reserve at the moment. This is the most numerous species of wild ungulates in the Kaluga Zasekas.
Every year, scientists and government inspectors conduct animal records in the reserve. They study the tracks of bison, understand the intricacies of their day crossings, and use information from camera traps. Specialists go through the routes on skis and drive dozens of kilometers of the protected area on snowmobiles and swamp walkers.
Visual records are carried out at five feeding grounds of the Kaluga Zasek, where the bulk of the bison living in the reserve come.
