The press service of the national park announced the opening of a memorial complex dedicated to the Far Eastern leopard of Pope Francis at the Gamow cluster. The nameplate will inform visitors about the rare cat and its famous patron.
The male, named Martin Fierro, was named by Pope Francis, who took the predator under his guardianship as part of the Leopard Keeper program. This predator has been recorded in the Gamovsky area since 2021. He became the first wild leopard to return to the area in decades. Martin Fierro has established himself in the Gamow area and successfully hunts deer here.
A memorial stone with a name sign is placed in the predator’s habitat. During the opening ceremony the weather was sunny and warm. As part of the event, participants were presented with the latest footage of the spotted Martin Fierro from camera traps.
