The press service of the Ministry of Natural Resources of the Russian Federation reported that a female Far Eastern leopard with three kittens was caught in the lens of a camera trap in a national park in China. Scientists of the national park "Land of the Leopard" found out that the mother of many children is from Russia and determined her individual number by the pattern on the skin.
Experts with the help of computer programs found out that in front of them is a female Leo 95F named Pooha. The predator has been recorded annually in the northern part of the territory of the "Land of the Leopard" near the border with China since 2015. In 2023, she disappeared from the field of view of hidden forest cameras. It was then that she left her station and found herself abroad.
Such migrations indicate the growth of the population and the expansion of the range of the rare cat. Previously, Leo 95F has never been caught in camera traps in the company of kittens. Scientists suggest that this is not the first brood for her.
"The unique footage was obtained thanks to the close cooperation of the Directorate of the Land of the Leopard Nature Reserves in Russia and the Northeastern Tiger and Leopard National Park in China. In the near future, it is planned to create the "Land of Big Cats" – the world's first cross-border reserve for the Far Eastern leopard and Amur tiger. It will include Chinese and Russian national parks," the Ministry of Natural Resources of the Russian Federation said.
The Far Eastern leopard is one of the rarest animals in the world. Its population in Russia totals 125 individuals. The core of the world's only wild population of the subspecies is located in Primorsky Krai, where it is protected in the Land of the Leopard National Park.
