The themed holiday takes place annually on November 24 and is established to raise awareness of the environmental issues causing the decline of this species.

Walruses are the largest pinnipeds found in the Northern Hemisphere. In size, they are second only to elephant seals. The Atlantic walrus lives in the North Atlantic, the Pacific walrus lives between Chukotka and Alaska, and the Laptev walrus lives in the Laptev Sea. The Atlantic and Laptev subspecies are listed in the Red Book of Russia. Every year, the Arctic specially protected natural areas, within which these animals live, coincide with a series of environmental education events on this date.
In the Nenets Reserve, on the basis of a recently opened eco-center, master classes and interactive classes were held for schoolchildren. Children had the opportunity to draw postcards to relatives and friends, and then send them using walrus mail.

Schoolchildren from Severodvinsk took part in the Arctic Starts held by the Russian Arctic National Park. The children competed in sports-intellectual games and master classes in ceramic clay modeling.

The Wrangel Island Nature Reserve held a series of lectures at the visitor center in the city of Pevek, focusing on the Pacific subspecies of the walrus. Specialists of the reserve note that the celebration of the Day of the walrus is not accidentally scheduled exactly on November 24th. In the last days of autumn, walruses leave the Arctic coast of the Chukchi Sea and go to winter in the Bering Strait, becoming especially vulnerable and in need of protection during their migration.

The press service of the Ministry of Natural Resources noted that it is possible to watch walruses in their natural habitat if you visit the eco-routes of the Wrangel Island nature reserve, as well as the Beringia and Russian Arctic national parks.
