The press service of the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute reported on the results of observations of the Laboratory of Climate Change and the Environment of AANIA for the accumulation of snow in Central Antarctica. The research has been carried out since 1970 at the snow measuring range at the Russian Antarctic station Vostok.
"According to research, the average rate of snow accumulation is 22.5 mm of water equivalent per year. The sharpest increase has been observed over the past two decades, when the amount of snow has increased by almost 1% annually," the report says.
According to scientists, the main factor in the growth of the snow surface mass balance is an increase in air temperature, which leads to an increase in precipitation in Central Antarctica. With a warming of 1 ° C, the accumulation of snow increases by about 11%.
However, it is not yet possible to conclude that Antarctica is gaining mass. The fact is that the loss of mass at the edges of the glacier exceeds the increase in precipitation within the continent.
The results of the study are published in the world's main glaciological journal, the Journal of Glaciology.
