The press service of the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute announced an agreement on cooperation with the Chinese Arctic and Antarctic Administration and the Polar Research Institute of China. A meeting of the leading polar research organizations of the two countries took place at the Russian scientific center on the Svalbard archipelago. Preparations for it lasted several months.
Representatives of scientific institutions shared plans for implementing work in the high latitudes of the Arctic and considered possible formats for cooperation. Scientists will discuss joint research projects within the framework of consultative meetings as early as this autumn.
Scientists also exchanged mutual invitations. The Chinese side was invited to join the Russian Arctic scientific expedition on the Svalbard archipelago and the drifting expeditions "North Pole". Russian scientists were invited to participate in an expedition on the Chinese research icebreaker "Xuelong 2".
Chinese experts emphasized that they are interested in cooperation. In their opinion, it can improve understanding of the entire Arctic system and will contribute to solving global problems. In the future, a system will be developed that will allow Russian and Chinese scientists to visit each other's scientific stations.
The message notes that Russia and China are already successfully cooperating in Antarctica, and today there is a need to expand this cooperation in the Arctic.
