A new visitor center has been opened in the remote Taimyr village of Ust-Avam under the program of support for the indigenous population of the peninsula, which is implemented by Norilsk Nickel.
The Arctic Development Project Office acted as the operator of the construction of the tourist infrastructure facility. Representatives of the indigenous peoples of Taimyr will work in the visit center. The facility will also serve as a cultural and educational center.
The population of the village is more than 350 people, mainly Dolgans and Nganasans, of whom about 80 are children.
Ust-Avam is located 330 km from the city of Dudinka and is surrounded by forest tundra, where remains of mammoth bones and tusks are often found. Transport links with the village are carried out in summer by river transport and small aircraft, in winter traffic is carried out by winter truck. According to the Norilsk Nickel program more than three dozen new houses have already been built in Ust-Avam to resettle residents from dilapidated housing, a paramedic and obstetric center has been equipped and a modular bath complex has been installed, the company's press service reported.
