Russia plans to create a whale protection center in the Murmansk Region, said Andrey Chibis, the governor of the region.

"We have decided to create a whale protection center in our region. In particular, there should be an operational response team if any whale is in danger again," the head of the region said.

A humpback whale, the Red Book endangered species, became entangled in the remains of nets in the area of Teriberka in early June. The trapped mammal was discovered by tourists. A mobile headquarters was deployed to rescue the animal. Work on its liberation began on June 11.

On June 16, after a two-hour chase, rescuers managed to cut a rope that squeezed the neck and mouth of the mammal with a hook and a knife. The rescue operation was successful, the remains of nets were pulled out of water, b-port.com reports.
