The opening of Notre Dame Cathedral for worship and the public is still planned for 2024, despite the difficult restoration work, assured the French Minister of Culture Rima Abdul Malak.
The promise to reopen Notre Dame in 2024 was made by President Emmanuel Macron on the night of the spectacular fire that destroyed the pearl of world-famous Gothic art on April 15, 2019.
The fire, the causes of which have not yet been precisely established, led to the collapse of a unique wooden frame, a spire of the XIX century, a clock and part of the cathedral's vault.
Titanic construction faced a slowdown in the pace of construction from the very beginning, in particular due to lead contamination of the building and the COVID-19 pandemic.
It is expected that by mid-2023, Notre Dame will regain its spire, which is under reconstruction.
The total budget for the restoration of the cathedral is 850 million euros.
