Winemaking in the Balkans has been known since ancient times. And today wine tours are very popular here. First of all, travelers are interested in products from autochthonous grape varieties. Croatia is especially famous for this, with more than 40 species of unique vines growing on 20,000 hectares of vineyards. Among them are the famous varieties of Poship, Vugava, Dingach, Vrbnichka. It is not for nothing that the products of local winemakers have been awarded numerous grand prix of world wine competitions, while the country is among the top ten wine regions in the world.

The most interesting thing is that most of the alcoholic beverages do not leave Croatia: everything is drunk inside the country and not only by tourists. The local population traditionally pays tribute to their wines. However, this is what is becoming a problem.

According to the local news agency HINA, Croatia is one of the leaders in Europe along with Bulgaria, Spain, Portugal and France in terms of daily alcohol consumption.

The Croatian Institute of Public Health (HZJZ) draws attention to the high level of alcoholism among young people. According to recent studies, 41.5% of boys and 45% of 13-year-old girls have consumed alcohol at least once in their lives. Among 15-year-olds, this figure is even higher: 66% for boys and 71% for girls.

These facts are alarming for a wide range of specialists: alcohol abuse has serious health consequences, causes chronic liver and heart diseases, leads to mental disorders, disability and even death. Alcoholism causes numerous personal problems and negatively affects family relationships.

In this regard, an extensive information campaign is being launched in Croatia in order to prevent and educate the population, as well as raise awareness among young people about the consequences of excessive alcohol consumption. In addition, a staff of psychologists is being created in educational institutions of the country, who will check the risks of psychological health of schoolchildren as part of annual medical examinations.
