Nornickel has presented its sustainability performance for 2022. The Company’s management and members of the public discussed the stakeholders that today view sustainability as an important matter, and also presented the results of a stakeholder survey.
Sustainability principles are at the core of Nornickel’s strategy. The Company regularly engages with the stakeholders to understand their expectations and take into account public opinion regarding the environmental and social sustainability of its operations.
This year’s results were disclosed by the Company’s top managers as part of an online presentation. The conference brought together more than 200 people, including Nornickel’s employees, representatives of the public and private sectors, local communities, environmental and other non-profit organisations, and industry players.
According to Nornickel’s management, some of the topics where the Company has made progress during the year include a health and safety programme designed to reduce the number of fatalities, Sulphur Programme in Norilsk, comprehensive research into biodiversity across the Company’s regions of operation, new principles and key projects of the social strategy that seek to improve the quality of life for local communities and to support Nornickel’s reputation as one of the most attractive employers in Russia, as well as climate change scenarios required for the Company to take into account climate change risks.
To determine the 2022 Sustainability Report’s topics, the survey assessed the Company’s business footprint based on three criteria: regularity, scale, and scope of positive and negative impacts. The Company surveyed 221 people, including 123 internal and 69 external stakeholders. The survey shows that the interest in environmental performance has gained momentum, while corporate governance has become a less prominent topic. Material topics now also include industrial environmental safety, the impact of transport on water bodies, responsible exploration, and land rehabilitation.
Nornickel is also planning to publish standalone reports covering human rights and climate change as annexes to the 2022 Sustainability Report.
Vladimir Zhukov, Vice President for Investor Relations and Sustainability at Nornickel, commented:
“Who needs sustainable development? The short answer is we all do — our employees and their families, government authorities, local and indigenous communities, ecologists, investors, and NGOs. And, of course, Nornickel does too, and to this end, we reaffirm our commitment to sustainable development by making hefty investments each year.”
