Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA) is leading a campaign by the local tourism industry to promote domestic travel tour packages.
The authority spokesperson Godfrey Chief Koti was quoted by H Metro as saying that the move was meant to create visibility around the domestic product.
“We know the importance of digital marketing and as the authority responsible for marketing the tourism industry,” he said.
“We have collaborated with various operators to further create visibility around the domestic tourism product.
“In the short term our target is movement around public holidays and celebratory days of note such as the upcoming Valentine’s Day.”
Koti said response from industry players had been “resounding” and they had confirmed an increase in enquiries on their Valentine’s packages.
Dynaly Travel and Tours company’s representative Daniel Madamombe recently told EcoToursim Expert that economic challenges in Zimbabwe were discouraging locals from domestic travel.
He said local hoteliers were also discouraging domestic travel as they were charging exorbitant fees compared to their peers in the region.
Zimbabwe is expected to register a negative economic growth of 2.5% in 2020 due to foreign currency shortages, elevated public debt and uncontrolled inflation, according to the United Nations.
