Zimbabwe's tourism sector received $300 million in investment last year as it recovered from the COVID-19 pandemic, according to state media reports.

The Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) quoted Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA) chief executive Winnie Muchanyuka as saying that the $300 million was invested in new facilities with restaurants, hotels, lodges, safaris and game parks dominating.

The southern African nation registered an increase in hotel occupancy.

Foreign tourists returned to Zimbabwe in 2022 as overall international arrivals rose 256% compared to 2021.

Visitors from other parts of Africa jumped 130% year-on-year.

Domestic tourism also grew with an average 86% room occupancy rate in the resort areas during the just-ended festive season.

The Herald recently reported that Zimbabwe's tourism receipts reached $580 million in the nine months to September 2022, an increase of 137,7% from $244 million, a year earlier.

Tourist arrivals are expected to increase to 1,4 million in 2023 while receipts are projected at $623 million.
