The rare Magnolia Delavayi and Magnolia Karpunii have bloomed in the Southern Cultures Park near Sochi, Russia. These two magnolias are among the rarest in the world, and their flowering is a special treat for visitors to the park.
The Magnolia Delavayi is a tall tree (8-9 meters) with a powerful crown and dense leaves up to 40 cm long. Its flowers are creamy white and have a melon aroma. The Magnolia Karpunii is named after the famous Sochi scientist, Russian botanist-dendrologist Yuri Nikolaevich Karpun. Its flowers are meaty red and have a watermelon scent.
The Magnolia Delavayi was added to the park's collection in the 1940s. The plant's homeland is the southern province of Yunnan, China. The specimen of Magnolia Delavayi in the Southern Cultures Park was the only one in the country for a long time. Later, several trees decorated one of the sanatoriums in Sochi.
The Magnolia Karpunii's appearance in the park is still the biggest mystery of "Southern Cultures". No one knows when this specimen appeared in the park, by whom the tree was planted, or where it was brought from. It is known that Magnolia Karpunii is an extremely rare species.
Once upon a time, the park was visited by a professor from China, who wrote the largest monograph on magnolias. And she, having seen the plant, said that she had never seen such a magnolia in any of the botanical gardens she had visited, and even in China. It can be safely assumed that the only known specimen of this magnolia grows in the "Southern Cultures" park, - сообщили в Кавказском заповеднике.
By the way, the flowering of these magnolias, like most species, is very fleeting. Just a few days - and the large flowers literally crumble.
