World's First Russian Desman Museum Opens in Ugra National Park

The press service of the Ministry of Natural Resources has announced the opening of the world's first Russian desman museum on the territory of the Ugra National Park in the Kaluga Region. The exposition was created to popularize knowledge about this rare animal, listed in the Red List of the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

The Russian desman is a relict mammal that is endemic to Russia. One of the largest groups of this species lives in the Ugra National Park. According to the results of the 2017 census, about 300 animals live on its territory.

The museum was named "The Kingdom of the Russian Desman". It is designed for both individual and group visits.Visitors will be told when this ancient species appeared on the planet, as well as who are the closest relatives, friends and enemies of the desman.

Guests will also be able to learn about the biological characteristics of the desman, for example, about its unique ability to sniff objects under water. In addition, visitors will be able to hear its voice and see a rare animal on the screen.
