The Day of the Wild Reindeer, which is being held for the sixth consecutive year, will be held online this year, WWF-Russia reports.
The event, initiated by the World Wildlife Fund and the Arkhangelsk Region Center for Nature Management and Environmental Protection, is aimed to draw attention to the problem of preserving a unique animal.
The Barents Branch of WWF Russia will hold a meeting in the WWF Russia community on VKontakte. Anyone is welcome to join it. Specialists who study and preserve this rare species will talk about their work in Arkhangelsk, Murmansk and the Komi Republic, where wild reindeer live. The broadcast will take place on February 17 at 20:00 following the link.
It was this year on February 17 that the wild reindeer was included in the Red Book of the Arkhangelsk Region. And in 2020 - in the Red Book of the Russian Federation. Unfortunately, experts come to disappointing conclusions - the number of wild deer is declining in all northern regions of the country. In Russia as a whole, the total number of the species is currently estimated at 950 thousand, which is 26% less than in 1999.
