The recovery of the tourism industry in Vietnam will begin first on the island of Phu Quoc, most likely to be followed by the ancient city-museum of Hoi An, which has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1999. This is the opinion of half of 200 hospitality experts surveyed by the consulting company Savills Vietnam. Famous beach destinations - Nha Trang, Cam Ranh and Vung Tau - are predicted to "recover" more slowly.
Phu Quoc, Vietnam's largest island, has become a popular tourist destination after the government introduced a 30-day visa-free policy for foreigners in 2014. In 2019, before the pandemic, it was visited by over five million guests, including over half a million foreigners.
From October, the island plans to open a six-month vaccination passport program, under which 40,000 foreign tourists from Asia and Europe will be able to come monthly.
Vietnam's tourism industry has gone through one of the most difficult periods in its history due to the impact of Covid-19. Overseas arrivals dropped nearly 80% last year to 3.8 million, while industry revenues fell nearly 56% to $ 780 million.
