A roundtable discussion titled "Marine Biodiversity of the Kamchatka Territory: Prospects for Study, Conservation, and Sustainable Use" was held as part of the All-Russian Ecological Forum "Ecosystem". Specialists from scientific and environmental organizations gathered to discuss the pressing issues of studying and preserving the inhabitants of the northern part of the Pacific Ocean.
The marine waters of the Kamchatka Territory are home to over 20 species of marine mammals. Approximately half of them are listed in the Red Book of Russia. These include the sea otter, Steller's sea lion, killer whale, gray whale,humpback whale, and others.
The press service of the Kronotsky Nature Reserve reported that during the event, experts discussed mechanisms and uniformity in studying and conducting surveys of pinnipeds and cetaceans. In particular, the most effective ways to conserve animals were identified to develop a unified strategy for addressing the problem at the regional and federal levels.
Another important topic of the meeting was the development of marine tourism in the region. Experts discussed how to reduce disturbance to animals during marine excursions. All participants of the roundtable made proposals for regulating such tourism. In the near future, a resolution will be prepared based on the results of the meeting, and then it will be submitted to the government of the Kamchatka Territory for further work.
