Turkish Airlines has resumed flights to Syria on January 23rd, marking the end of a 13-year suspension due to the ongoing civil war in the Arab country, according to INTERFAX.RU citing the Turkish news agency Anadolu.
The first flight in 13 years departed from Istanbul to Damascus, carrying approximately 350 passengers.
"Since the beginning of the Syrian civil war in 2011, over 6 million people have left the country, according to the UN. Turkey has taken in about 3 million refugees," INTERFAX.RU notes.
Last December, armed opposition groups entered Damascus, and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad resigned and left the country.
According to UN data from early January 2025, over 115,000 Syrians have returned to their homeland from Turkey, Jordan, and Lebanon, the Russian news agency reports.
