An international dendrochronology expedition has taken place in the Central Siberian Reserve in Krasnoyarsk Krai.Scientists from Russia, China, and Tajikistan participated in the expedition.
"The expedition route followed the Yenisei River, the Podkamennaya Tunguska River, and its tributaries, where samples of various tree species were taken for further study," the reserve reported on its website.
Scientists collected wood samples (cores) to reconstruct hydroclimatic factors that form in the floodplain terraces of the Yenisei River and its tributaries. This work will be carried out using dendrochronological methods - by analyzing the annual rings of trees. Experts aim to predict possible changes in hydroclimatic factors.
"Studying the influence of these factors is necessary to understand climate change in this region and to develop recommendations for adapting settlements located along the river to possible environmental changes," said Maria Gurskaya, leading researcher at the dendrochronology laboratory of the Institute of Plant and Animal Ecology of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
