The tourism sector, which remains under-utilised, has the potential to widen Nigeria's revenue base, according to an official from the Lagos State.
The state chairperson of traditional sports association Ogunbiyi was quoted by the local media as saying that Nigeria was blessed with tourists and heritage sites.
She cited places such as Obudu Cattle Ranch, Cross River State, Gashaka National Park, Taraba State, Ikogosi Watersprings, Ekiti State and Olumo Rock as some of the country’s tourist destinations
Ogunbiyi said although a lot of efforts were made to grow the tourism sector in Nigeria, a misconception and lack of understanding of the value it can bring and its relationship with the broader economy is still stunting its growth.
She also called for the growth of domestic tourism and for locals to reduce travelling overseas for holidays.
"Tourism has to do with people, the movement of people, people taking the initiative to pursue adventure for some time," Ogunbiyi said.
