Sikhote-Alinsky is one of the oldest and largest reserves in the range of the Amur tiger, which is of key importance for the conservation of the rare predator population as a whole, according to a message on the website of the Russian Ministry of Natural Resources. Over the long years of the existence of protected areas, a whole network of more than 50 objects has been created here for the comfortable work of inspectors and researchers - cordons, scientific hospitals, taiga huts. Many of these facilities were built in the second half of the last century and have exhausted their resources, so they needed to be updated, the ministry explained.
“All new hospitals are made according to a single project and are adapted to accommodate up to 5-6 people at any time of the year. The inspectors who patrol this area, our scientists or visiting scientists who conduct their research here will be able to stop here. We plan to continue updating the infrastructure in other parts of the reserve," said Svetlana Sutyrina, director of the reserve, quoted by the Russian Ministry of Natural Resources on its website.
In addition, she noted, it is planned to provide the most visited cordons and hospitals with small power systems with solar panels.
This project is implemented with the support of the World Wildlife Fund. According to the director of the Amur branch of the fund, Pyotr Osipov, the stationary infrastructure is the most important "base" of nature reserves and national parks.
“The more places in the protected area for a comfortable stay of inspectors and researchers, the more productive the scientific work of the reserve and the more effective the protection of the territory,” the Russian Ministry of Natural Resources quotes him.
The department also noted that in the late 90s, the Sikhote-Alinsky became one of the first "tiger" reserves, where an anti-poaching task force was created. It is home to most of the Amur tiger population in Central Sikhote-Alin. Since 2006, camera traps have been used in the reserve along with the traditional method of winter route counts to study the tiger and its prey base.
