Three Greek Ski Resorts to Unite Through New Road Network

Authorities from three ski resorts in northern Greece have decided to unite them through a modern road network. At a recent meeting, projects aimed at improving accessibility to the Kaimaktsalan, Pigadio, and Seli ski centers were discussed.

The topic of modernizing the road network in northern Greece has become especially relevant following Bulgaria's accession to the Schengen Area in January 2025. Despite the Greek border crossing at Xanthi-Rudozem not yet being fully operational, the population has begun actively visiting neighboring countries. Greeks have been drawn to Bulgaria for cheaper tobacco and gasoline, while Bulgarians traditionally prefer to visit Greek cafes and taverns.

Given the growing interest in visiting Greece from both Bulgarians and neighboring Albania and North Macedonia, it was decided to channel this interest towards sports tourism. Moreover, mountain tourism is becoming increasingly popular. It allows visitors to combine skiing with hiking and sightseeing, of which there are many in Greece.

It is expected that the roadmap for connecting the three ski resorts will not only reduce travel time between them but also transform the region into a first-class mountain tourism center. According to the authorities, the development of infrastructure and cooperation in their regions will contribute to the growth of the local economy, which in turn will create conditions for sustainable and diverse tourism.
