The COVID-19 pandemic has dealt a significant blow to the tourism sector in Europe.
The World Travel & Tourism Council has published data on the share of the tourism industry in the GDP of European countries in 2021.
Montenegro's economy turned out to be the most dependent of all, with tourism accounting for a quarter of the national GDP. This indicator is relatively high in other Balkan states, where it ranged from 10% to 20% and higher.
In France, the economic weight of the travel and tourism sector in 2021 was 6.5% of GDP, which roughly corresponds to the European average of 6.2%.
In Spain and Italy, the share of the tourism sector in GDP was 8.5% and 9.1%, respectively, last year. In pre-pandemic 2019, in all three countries, the economic effect of tourism reached 13-14% of GDP.
In 2021, a relatively prosperous situation developed in Greece, where the economic weight of the travel and tourism sector was more than 20%. In Turkey, it reached 7.3%, in Romania – 3.8%.
The German economy last year depended on tourism by 6.4%, the UK – by 5.7%, Poland – by 2.8%. In the Nordic countries, the economic weight of the tourism industry was at the level of 5.3 - 5.5% of national GDP.
