Activities to clear the Baksan River in the Elbrus region of Kabardino-Balkaria began this autumn. The work is carried out within the framework of the national project "Ecology". In total, it is planned to clean 13 kilometers of the river by the end of 2024, the Russian Ministry of Natural Resources reported on its website.
Rosvodresursy provided about 250 million rubles for the three-year work.
“The main source of pollution in Baksan is wood rubbish and mud and stone sediments from the mountains. In some areas, islands were formed from rock-detrital material, boulders, trunks, large branches and karch. The area near the villages of Elbrus and Tegenekli was recognized as the most littered,” the ministry said.
In order to improve the ecological state of the river and prevent degradation, problem areas must be removed from large objects that impede the flow.
“In winter, the water levels in the river are minimal, which makes it possible to carry out activities to clear bottom sediments without much difficulty. The contractor will take the necessary production break in the summer, when glaciers are actively melting and Baksan's expenses reach a maximum. Upon completion of the work, environmental living conditions will improve for five thousand residents of Kabardino-Balkaria,” said Natalia Sologub, deputy head of the Federal Water Resources Agency, quoted by the Russian Ministry of Natural Resources.
The Baksan River originates from the Azau glaciers and flows within the boundaries of rural settlements in five districts of the republic. It is popular with local residents and tourists, as it is located in a specially protected natural area of the federal significance of the Prielbrusye National Park. “Also, the uniqueness of Baksan is that a valuable species of fish lives in its waters - brown trout (trout),” the ministry stressed.
