Monitoring of tiger tracks in the snow has begun on the territory of the Lazovsky Nature Reserve (Primorsky Krai), the Russian wildlife portal nature reports.kremlin.ru.
"This type of predator accounting is important for accurately determining the number of individuals. Unlike monitoring with automatic cameras, tracking footprints in the snow allows you to record tigresses with the entire brood. During the monitoring, the accountants will follow 21 routes that cover the entire territory of the reserve," the portal notes.
Some of the routes are designed for multi-day passage, so specialists will have to spend the night on the cordons of the reserve. There will also be a count of ungulates, which are the food base of the red book cat.
Simultaneously with the monitoring of the tiger, winter route accounting is carried out for all other species of animals living on the territory of the reserve. This is done annually.
