The other day, a record 200th bat came to the Chiroptera Rehabilitation Center, the Moscow Zoo reported on its website.
Two two-color leathers, male and female, were found together in an ordinary apartment - they ended up in a nursery prepared for the expected baby.
“The future parents were very frightened - the employees of SpasReserve rushed to their aid, with whom the zoo has been cooperating for a long time. The rescuers not only seized the uninvited guests, but also told the owners about the bats, calmed them down, praised them and took the pets to the zoo,” the message says.
The male was the first to fall into the hands during registration and was recorded in the database under the number 22-0199.
“Thus, our Bat Rehabilitation Center now has a record number of patients. Most likely, the influx of mice will not end at number 200 this season, they usually come to us in large numbers until mid-December,” the zoo noted.
The Chiroptera Rehabilitation Center of the Moscow Zoo has been operating since 2017.
Experts explain the annual increase in the number of bats at the center by increasing people's awareness.
“They learn about our Center, and if they see a bat, they are not afraid, but calmly contact the specialists of the Moscow Zoo and find out what to do. In addition, attitudes towards bats have changed. They are not considered parasites, pests, they no longer see them as a threat. People began to understand that these are also living creatures that need our help and care,” said Olga Ilchenko, head of the Experimental Department of Small Mammals at the zoo.
