The website of the mayor of Moscow reported that the baby was discovered by the zoo staff in the incubator during the planned daily examination of the eggs. She got out of the shell on her own, without the help of veterinarians. Now the radiated tortoise feels well, eats with appetite, bathes, actively moves and takes sunbaths.

When born, the cub weighed 29 grams, and the length of its shell was five centimeters. Now the weight of the turtle has increased to 50 grams. The sex of a small reptile can be determined only after a few years.

The baby started eating a few days after hatching. He is fed several types of lettuce, sweet fruits, zucchini and pumpkin. Over time, the diet will change.

The Zoo staff have been trying for three years to ensure the reproduction of radiated tortoises.  The facility currently houses five adult reptiles. To increase the chances of success, employees took the turtles out into the sun, into outdoor enclosures for the summer, and sent them to a small hibernation in the fall. The animals were kept in a group so that the males could arrange tournaments for the female, as this stimulated reproduction.
