Minister of Natural Resources and Ecology Alexander Kozlov said at the II International Forum on Tiger Conservation that the responsibility for poaching needs to be strengthened.
"Russia is in favor of even tougher punishment for poaching and for the synchronization of legislation in all countries of the tiger range," the minister said.
According to him, in these states punishment for crimes against a wild cat is provided - on average, it threatens with imprisonment for a term of three to ten years, but "this is not enough."
In a conversation with journalists, Kozlov noted that the department is preparing relevant proposals and "they will be announced in the near future."
According to the minister, it is also necessary to tighten legislation to combat poachers who destroy the animals that tigers feed on - deer boars.
Minister of Justice of the Russian Federation, head of the Supervisory Board of the ANO Amur Tiger Center Konstantin Chuichenko said at the forum that poachers are the main threat to tigers today. At the same time, in recent years in Russia, less and less wild cats die at their hands.
“If in the past, 10 years ago, we said that 50-70 tigers per year were killed by poachers, today expert estimates come down to 15-20 tigers,” he said.
The II International Tiger Forum was held in Vladivostok on September 5 as part of the Eastern Economic Forum. The participants summed up the results of the global predator recovery program over the past 12 years - since the first tiger summit.
The forum was attended by representatives of India, North Korea, Thailand, Malaysia, Myanmar, Laos, Vietnam, Nepal and Kazakhstan.
