The press service of the Land of the Leopard National Park announced the results of a survey of wild Amur tigers living in this protected area and adjacent areas in the south-west of Primorsky Krai. Experts counted 58 adults. This is the highest number of Amur tigers among all protected natural areas of the planet.
“New information was obtained by analyzing data from the largest photo monitoring network in Russia - more than 500 cameras. Research has been carried out for more than 10 years in the Land of the Leopard National Park, its buffer zone and in the Kedrovaya Pad Nature Reserve. Here is a large group of the Amur tiger, as well as the core of the world's only wild population of Far Eastern leopards, numbering 125 individuals,” the report says.
Experts note that most of the new adults in the population are young tigers from previously known broods. In addition, scientists noticed the alignment of the sex ratio. A few years ago, the number of females was twice as high, and in this reference period, 31 females and 26 males were registered. The sex of another adult could not be determined.
“We also received data on three litters of 11 kittens. Two out of three broods are record-breaking: five and four cubs,” the report says.
The national park emphasizes that the high density of the Amur tiger indicates favorable conditions for its existence and reproduction. The "Land of the Leopard" provides strict protection against poaching and forest fires, and maintains a rich variety of prey for predators. In addition, various projects are being implemented to study and monitor, as well as to increase the level of environmental education and awareness of the local population.
Experts note that the number of sika deer is also growing, which is one of the most important objects of hunting for tigers and leopards. In total, 28 thousand heads of deer were counted in the south-west of the region. The abundance of food supply allows two big cats to coexist in harmony at once. At the same time, the observed increase in the number of tigers does not affect the well-being of the leopard.
