The authorities of the Norwegian regions bordering Russia organized the «Pasvikseminaret-2021» seminar. During the seminar the Norwegian scientists presented their research on the environment of the border area between Russia and Norway, says Modern Diplomacy.
Tore Flatlandsmo Berglen, a researcher at the Norwegian Institute for Atmospheric Research (NILU), noted a significant improvement in air quality in the border area. Thus, in the 70-80s of the last century, when one of the Norilsk Nickel divisions, Pechenganikel, annually emitted 400,000 tons of sulfur dioxide into the atmosphere, in the 90s this figure dropped to 100,000 tons, he was quoted as saying.
After the closure of the Nikel plant in December 2020, the content of sulfur dioxide and heavy metals in the atmosphere at the border between Norway and the Murmansk region met all international requirements.
Scientists have also conducted research on water resources, fish and berries. According to the results, nature in the border area is being restored. All this testifies to the successful joint work of ecologists and local industrial enterprises, whose strategy is aimed at preserving the environment.

The program focuses on preventing environmental pollution from the Nickel plant and monitoring the state of the environment in the border area.
