From 2010 to 2021, the contribution of the tourism industry to the Moscow economy has more than tripled - from 30 billion to 98 billion rubles, according to the official portal of the mayor and government of the capital, citing the head of the city Committee for Tourism Yevgeny Kozlov.
“Tourism covers over 50 sectors of the economy and therefore is of the utmost importance for the city. Today, every 14th workplace in the city is somehow connected with the hospitality industry,” said Kozlov, whose words are quoted in the message.
In the three quarters of this year, 14.1 million tourists visited the capital, while in the whole of 2021 the city received 16.9 million visitors.
“Most often, residents of St. Petersburg, the Krasnodar Territory, the Tula, Vladimir and Nizhny Novgorod regions came to Moscow,” the report says.
According to Kozlov, people currently visit the capital mainly because of cultural events and city events. Thus, the Moscow Seasons cycle of festivals, regional and city fairs, as well as major sporting events, such as the Moscow Marathon, are very popular.
In addition, business tourism is also developing in the capital.
“Last year, 3.2 million people came to the capital for business purposes, which accounted for 19 percent of the total tourist flow to the city. Business events have a positive impact on the economy and provide income for all categories of contractors all year round, including during the low tourist season,” the city hall said.
