The Clean Arctic project, aimed at cleaning the Arctic zone of the Russian Federation from waste accumulated since Soviet times, is planned to be extended to Svalbard, Chairman of the Board of the Clean Arctic autonomous non - profit organization Ruslan Gubaidullin told TASS.

The head of the Ministry of Regional Development Alexey Chekunkov previously reported that coal is not the future of Svalbard, the archipelago is interesting to tourists, and it is necessary to invest in this direction.

The Russian Federation has been working on Svalbard for more than 90 years, in 1931 the Arktikugol trust was founded, which produces 120 thousand tons of coal per year. This year, the government of the Russian Federation decided to transfer the management of the trust of the Ministry of Regional Development.

"Clean Arctic" has become a platform that unites public and volunteer organizations, scientists, heads of regions and business. The project partners are Norilsk Nickel, Rosatom, Phosagro and Russian Railways.
