The Citadel of Ajaccio, built by the Genoese in the 15th century and served as a military facility until July 2019, is open to the general public for the first time.
The event is timed to coincide with the bicentennial of the death of Napoleon Bonaparte, celebrated in 2021. The Emperor of the French, a commander and statesman who laid the foundations of the modern French state, was born in Ajaccio on August 15, 1769 in a house located a few hundred meters from the fortress.
The citadel was built in 1492 as a strategic object for the effective protection of the city from attacks from the sea.
Ajaccio is the administrative center and port of the island of Corsica in the Mediterranean Sea, belonging to France.
