Employees of the Caucasian Reserve studied footage of camera traps taken in early December in one of the natural areas, and noted some unusual facts in the behavior of brown bears.
About seven individuals of different sex and age constantly live in this area. This year, in the northern part of the reserve, the beech gave a good harvest, so the bears did not rush about in search of food, but ate beech nuts, according to a message on the website of the natural area.
“They ate well, looking very well-fed bears, with a good supply of fat mass for the winter,” they said in the reserve.
However, despite the good weight, the bears in the forests of the reserve do not sleep yet. Researchers were able to personally verify this when they met one owner of the forest while checking camera traps.
“It was not easy for a bear to run away from people - nevertheless, with such a body weight, its speed and mobility are greatly reduced,” the reserve said.
According to Professor Anatoly Kudaktin, a warm winter affects the mode of bears: they have more time to find food and accumulate fat for wintering. When the frost hits, part of the population will go to the lairs, and part will go down below and can still wander through the forests.
Employees carried out maintenance work on camera traps in mid-December. They worked on the northern macroslope - in the upper reaches of the Molchepa River, not far from the Guzeripl cordon, several animal tracking devices were installed at once.
The final conclusions about the obtained data from camera traps will be made after the analysis of the entire amount of information.
