The press service of the national park "Land of the Leopard" reported that the season of birth of bay seal cubs - the Far Eastern seal – has begun in the Far Eastern Marine Reserve. About 200-300 babies have already been recorded on the islands.
Seal's birth season will last for several months. Its peak will be in the second half of February, when the majority of cubs will be born – more than 70%. It is during this period that scientists will be able to continue studying the dynamics of fertility and estimate the population size of this species. The season will end approximately in early April.
Most bay seal individuals in Peter the Great Bay breed on the islands of the Rimsky-Korsakov archipelago. The observation of local seals is unique. The fact is that here bay seals breed right on the shores, and not on ice floes, as it happens in other places.
The islands of the reserve are an ideal "maternity hospital", since anthropogenic pressure is minimized in these places. Bay seal always gives birth to only one cub. The body length of newborns is about 90 cm, and the weight is from 7 to 11 kg.
In February, scientists plan to conduct new seal census. These animals are of great importance to the ecosystem and are one of the symbols of the Far Eastern Marine Reserve.
