Since mid-May, several countries in the Balkans have been struggling with floods. In Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, incessant rains have caused the level of mountain rivers to rise above the critical level.
In Bosnia and Herzegovina, heavy rains led to the flooding of the rivers Una, Sana, Gomenica. The level of the Lim, Drina, Bosna, and Neretva rivers has risen sharply. Due to the water spill, traffic is difficult in the cities of Prijedor, Novi Grad and Kostajnica, and the Una National Park is also closed to the public. The spilled Blagay River flooded the resting places located on its banks. The owners of restaurants in these picturesque places lament that they cannot offer their services to tourists. Local authorities are closely monitoring the alarming situation, urging the population to comply with security measures.
In Croatia, the rivers Una, Sava, Zrmanja and Otucha overflowed their banks, flooding the towns of Obrovac and Gracac, as well as houses in Kashtanica. Firefighters and emergency services have been dispatched to help the affected areas. The evacuees are taken by boat to the temporary residence centers for which schools and houses of culture have been converted. Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic promises help in rebuilding the affected regions.
The weather does not please the residents of neighboring Serbia, Montenegro, and Bulgaria. May this year is more like autumn than spring here. Low temperatures, frequent rains with strong winds and hail keep these countries in suspense: will the rivers overflow their banks or will this time be manageable? Forecasters warn that extraordinary rainfall in Central Bulgaria, Serbia and Montenegro will raise the water table, increasing the risk of landslides and floods. The Mediterranean cyclone is to blame, the action of which can last until the end of May.
