The countries participating in the UN Convention on Biological Diversity are preparing to sign a new ten-year plan to preserve the nature of our planet, WWF-Russia Director Dmitry Gorshkov said at a TASS press conference.
One of the points of this agreement may be the creation of protected natural areas on 30 percent of the area of our planet.
According to him, Russia plays a leading role in the issue of environmental protection.
One of the points of the plan, which will be developed at the meeting in Kunming, may be the creation of protected natural areas on 30 percent of the area of our planet.
Russia could complement this goal and offer at least half of this area to create specially protected area, that is, zones with more stringent requirements, such as national parks, wildlife sanctuaries and reserves, said Gorshkov.
This could increase the effectiveness of the task set before the world community. In Russia, PAs occupy 13.5% of the country's area, and by 2030 this figure will undoubtedly be increased to 15%.
The TASS press conference was also attended by UN Goodwill Ambassador Vyacheslav Fetisov, Director of the KBR Secretariat Alexander Shestakov (Canada), ex-Director of WWF International Programs Georg Schwede (Germany) and Director of International Relations of the National Geographic Society of the USA Alice Jay (UK).
The speakers agreed that the role of Russia in preserving natural resources is great, and if successful in reaching the indicator of 30% of protected areas, not only animals, but also people themselves will remain in the win.
