The head of the Ministry of Natural Resources of Russia Dmitry Kobylkin said that the damage to Arctic water resources due to the fuel spill in Norilsk is unprecedented. According to the Ministry of Natural Resources of Russia, Rosprirodnadzor conducted an evaluation for the damage caused and sent claims for voluntary compensation for damage to the Norilsk-Taimyr Energy Company, a member of the Norilsk Nickel group.

The damage caused to water bodies due to pollution is equal to 147 046 011 000 rubles, to soils - 738 616 500 rubles, the press service of the department said.

“If we recall the accident of the Exxon Exxon Valdis tanker off the coast of Alaska, the amount of damage and fines presented was more than $ 5 billion,” the head of the Ministry of Natural Resources added.

On May 29, 21 163 tons of oil products spilled on the territory of TPP-3 of the Norilsk-Taimyr Energy Company as a result of subsidence of the concrete pillars and the destruction of the tank, which caused pollution and environmental damage.
