More than 3,500 tame elephants in Thailand are now on the verge of starvation due to a sharp decline in tourist flow.
According to the Bangkok Post, despite efforts by animal welfare groups to phase out the use of elephants in the tourism industry - from rides and circus performances to swimming with them, there were still 245 elephant "camps". After the outbreak of the pandemic, tame elephants were chained and have been living on an extremely poor diet for 15 months.
To save the surviving giants, renowned animal welfare activist Dr. Jane Goodall has partnered with Save Elephant Foundation Founder Lek Chailert to launch a global campaign to provide immediate relief to starving elephants, "Foodbank: Battle For Survival." Its aim is to draw the attention of the international community to the tragic plight of these exploited animals and the indifference of the Thai authorities.
According to the organizers of the campaign, a donation of any amount will help. For as little as $ 56 for six months, or $ 122 a year, you can take patronage over any elephant and get regular photos and videos to see how it is doing.
