Tesla may fell 193 hectares of pine forest in the federal state of Brandenburg, Germany, where the American electric car maker intends to build its concern.
Despite the fact that the company has significantly revised the initial application for the construction of its plant, the residents of the city of Grünheide, where the plant will be located, and local ecologists strongly oppose its creation. According to them, the factory will imbalance the local flora and fauna due to the destruction of a huge plot of the forest.
According to the amended application, the initially presented on-site battery and plastics production disappeared from the plans. Nevertheless, production capacity was increased, although at the moment the planned annual output is only at 100,000 cars. The government of Brandenburg, however, insists that the previously announced rapid increase in production to 500,000 cars per year.
This, reportedly, can lead to an increase in the plant’s area and the felling of 193 hectares of pine forest (initially 154 hectares), where the concern is already under construction.
Tesla has already cleared 90 hectares of pine forest and leveled the land for the construction.
The American manufacturer of electric vehicles plans to spend about 1.065 billion Euros in building its first factory in Europe. Construction work is expected to last until March 2021. Production in the town of Grünheide near Berlin, the launch of which is scheduled for July 2021, is planned to take place in three shifts, 24 hours a day - 2100 employees per shift.
The plant is expected to create 8-10 thousand jobs.
