Tanzania earned $3.3 billion from tourism receipts in the year ending November 2023 compared to $2.4 billion a year earlier, according to data released by the country’s central bank.

The Bank of Tanzania said the increase in travel receipts reflects the rebound of the tourism sector, as tourist arrivals rose by 27% to about 1.8 million.

The tourism industry was in a state of recovery following the COVID-19 pandemic, which prompted worldwide travel bans to prevent the virus from spreading further.

Tanzania's tourism receipts dropped to $1 billion in 2020 and $1,2 billion in 2021 from the pre-pandemic earnings of $2,5 billion in 2019.

The East African nation aims to attract 5 million visitors and generate $6 billion in tourism-related revenue by the year 2025.
