A full count has already been conducted in 112 municipalities of the Republic of Bulgaria. The census of nests in the rest of the country will continue in the summer of this year. According to the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds, the number of stork nests in the country is increasing. Preliminary results have revealed 4482 nests.

Employees of the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds (BSPS), experts from the Regional Inspectorate of Environment and Water (RIOSV), representatives of non-governmental organizations, employees of natural parks, and more than 100 volunteers are participating in the white stork nest census in Bulgaria.

During the census, each stork nest is recorded: in which settlement it is located, what is its condition, whether there are chicks in it, on what it is located - a chimney, a tree, a bell tower, or an electric pole. Using a mobile application, participants in the campaign receive on their phones the coordinates of each nest registered during the previous census 10 years ago.

The first stage of the VIII International Stork Nest Census took place in the summer of 2024, and the data obtained is currently being processed. The continuation of the Great Census will take place in the summer of 2025.
