Spain, which is the second most popular destination in the world after France, was visited by 21.8 million people this summer. This is the highest figure in the history of tourism in Spain.
According to the National Institute of Statistics, 10.9 million international tourists visited the country in July, and another 10.9 million in August. This is 7.3% more than in the same period of 2023. The majority of tourists came from the UK (4.17 million), France (3.75 million), Germany (2.49 million) and Italy (1.35 million). The number of tourists from the USA also increased significantly (+13%): 858 thousand entries were registered.
In the first eight months of this year Spain received a total of 64.8 million tourists, which is also a record figure. Tourism spending in the specified period reached 86.7 billion euros, an average of 187 euros per day per tourist. This is 17.6% higher than in 2023.
According to the tourism organization-employer Exceltur, Spain will receive 90 million foreign tourists in 2024, compared to a record 85.1 million last year. Tourism revenues, including the domestic tourist flow, are expected to exceed 200 billion euros. This would increase the contribution of tourism to the Spanish economy to 13.2%, says Exceltur.
Participants discussed the boundary between nature and ecotourism, whether mass visits to unique areas can remain safe, the responsibilities of investors, and how to prepare tourists for visiting specially protected natural areas.
The head of state expressed confidence that the Forum will be held at a high level, and that its results will contribute to the development of tourism in Russia and the expansion of humanitarian and business ties.
