The majority of the members of the South African Airways Pilots' Association (SAAPA) has voted in favour of an in-principle settlement that will see about 290 pilots being retrenched and end all disputes with the airline.

At least 50% plus one SAAPA member's vote in favour were needed to implement the agreement and 95% of them backed the move.

SAAPA represents at least 90% of pilots at SAA.

More than 200 SAA pilots had already taken voluntary severance packages during the airline's business rescue process.

The further retrenchment of 290 pilots will see the airline remaining with 88 pilots under SAA's rescue plan.

"The in-principle agreement is now being put into proper legal context and language. In terms of the agreement, SAAPA members, who haven't been paid in 15 months, will start receiving payments within 72 hours of the agreement being signed, including the 13th cheque owed from two years ago," SAAPA chairperson Captain Grant Back was quoted as saying by News24.

The Labour Court recently dismissed an urgent application by SAAPA to stop the airline from using replacement labour while its members were on strike.

SAAPA also wanted the lockout of its members to be declared unlawful and unprotected.
