The Smelt Festival, a culinary event in honor of one of the gastronomic symbols of the Northern capital, was held on May 10-11 at the Peter and Paul Fortress in St. Petersburg. This was reported by the tourist portal Visit Petersburg.
The festival was held on Hare Island on the banks of the Kronverksky Strait.
As the portal notes, according to legend, the smelt was to the liking of Peter the Great - the emperor was served it for lunch. And in 1708, by royal decree, the first smelt festival in history was held in St. Petersburg.
It was revived in 2002. Traditionally, the festival is timed to coincide with the spawning period, when smelt comes from the seas and lakes into the rivers.
