Due to climate change and human influence on nature, every year there are fewer places for nesting birds of prey. Trees are cut down, fields are plowed up, minerals are being mined. It is difficult for birds to find safe and suitable places to breed.
For this reason, ornithologists establish artificial nesting sites in places where there is enough food for birds. These dwellings are comfortable, durable and protect the chicks to the maximum from cold, wind and falling from the nest, even in conditions of weather disasters.
Artificial dwellings are boxes made of OSB-plate or platforms made of branches and sticks. The press service of the World Wildlife Fund said that this year ornithologists built 30 nest boxes and 20 platforms on rocks and trees for rare birds of prey in the republics of Tuva and Altai.
In total, since 2017, more than 250 such artificial nesting sites have been built in the Altai-Sayan ecoregion. The job of ornithologists to set up nest boxes is called nestboxing. Many years of experience proves that such dwellings are successfully inhabited by various species of birds of prey, including the rare Saker Falcon.
In addition, saker falcon chicks from the nursery are placed in nest boxes. People put food in it, and birds get used to life in nature.
Artificial nesting sites help to increase the breeding success and survival of birds. Next season, ornithologists are planning a new stage of construction work to preserve rare birds.
