The press service of the Losiny Ostrov National Park announced the summing up of the results of the next stage of research work on the study of the population of wild sika deer. Employees of the Elk Biological Station and specialists from the Department of Veterinary Medicine of Rosbiotech are creating a detailed “database” about animals living in the closed territory of the national park.

Currently, a herd of about 220 individuals lives in Losiny Ostrov. In 2022, scientists conducted a clinical examination of their health. A comprehensive examination included a clinical examination, morphometric measurements, biochemical and clinical blood tests, an ultrasound examination of the heart, as well as a toxicological examination of environmental objects and parenchymal organs.

The results of the research are entered into individual "health passports". Each deer has a special red tag with a number on its ear, which allows you to identify the animal, find out information about its state of health and other data.

"Specialists determined the sex and age composition of animals in the wild herd, the sex ratio among the adult population and at birth, studied the factors of anthropogenic impact that affect the dynamics of the number of ungulates, the mechanisms for increasing the immune and metabolic status of animals," the report says.

The head count and understanding of the clinical status of animals makes it possible to calculate the density of the species in a particular area.
